Portugal

If you haven't been to Portugal yet, I recommend you put it near the top of your list. It's definitely one of my favourite countries in the world and I'm sure you'll be charmed by it too.

Portugal was the first stop on my year-long journey across 12 countries, and it set the tone for everything that followed. I landed in Lisbon just as the sun was rising, and that moment felt symbolic: a fresh start, a new chapter. Lisbon's charm is undeniable: the pastel buildings, the trams clattering up steep hills, and the scent of fresh pastel de natas wafting from every corner. I spent my days exploring the city's neighbourhoods like the historic Alfama district and the trendy streets of Bairro Alto. Evenings were often spent watching the sunset over the Tagus River, a glass of vinho verde in hand, reflecting on the day's adventures.

From Lisbon, I ventured north to Porto, a city that felt like a hidden gem. Porto's laid-back atmosphere was a welcome contrast to Lisbon's big city energy. Porto's vibe can be strongly felt wandering through its narrow streets, discovering local cafés and sampling the city's famous francesinha sandwich. The Ribeira district, with its colourful buildings lining the Douro River, became a favourite spot of mine. I also took the opportunity to visit the Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.

A few years later, my journey took me to Madeira, an island that felt like a world unto itself. Its rugged cliffs, lush forests, and serene beaches are a testament to its breathtaking natural beauty. After visiting Madeira, I had no doubt in my mind that this planet was solely designed to be dramatically beautiful. I can easily get behind the slow island culture, glistening ocean, dramatic cliffs, foggy forests, delicious seafood, and shining sun.

Throughout my time in Portugal, I was struck by the country's blend of tradition and modernity across the historic architecture of Lisbon and Porto to the local community in Madeira. The culture, safety, and welcoming nature of its people made it an ideal place to visit. As I reflect on my experiences, it's clear that Portugal became a benchmark for the rest of my travels.

Portugal taught me the importance of embracing new beginnings and the value of community. It's a country that encourages you to slow down, savour each moment, and connect deeply with your surroundings.
